Saint Andrew's Celebrates Black History

Saint Andrew’s School came together to participate in a number of ways to honor and celebrate Black History as an Episcopal school. Across grades and disciplines, our faculty and students engaged in discussions, shared personal insights, and studied historical facts and outcomes to celebrate.

Throughout this month, students had the opportunity to learn more about black history and heritage during their designated times for Chapel and Assembly.

The Lower and Upper School welcomed Dr. Clarence Brooks, who led a small ensemble of independent African American artists performing a range of idioms. Each performance celebrated black culture throughout the years. Click here to see the whole performance.

The Black Student Union held multiple events for Black History Month including game nights, a movie night, and black history slideshow presentations.

The Boca Raton Historical Society also visited Saint Andrew’s to do a presentation to Lower School students about the Historical Black Neighborhood known as Pearl City. 

The Middle School had a guest speaker, Jason Craige Harris, and a guest dance performer, Reese McWilliams from Dance Company, Ericka Squire, to celebrate black history. Author of Step Into My Shoes: Memoirs From the Other Side of America, Micah Dawanyi, also visited the Middle School to talk about his experiences.

As a way to honor black history, a few Upper School classes contributed to a cross-disciplinary Collaborative Project. 

The African American History Class, IB Visual Art HL/SL Year 1, and Honors Drawing worked together to curate an exhibition around artwork and written and video explanations to develop a rich experience and help the audience engage more deeply with black history and success in the 20th century.

Those projects will be displayed in a  Black History Pop-Up Art Show taking place March 6 - March 10, 2023, in the Domenico Mazzone Visual Arts Building and Anthony Newley Family Art Gallery, weekdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
